Tire and Wheel Weights

One of the things to be considered in building a Jeep is the weight of the tire and wheel assembly that is bolted to the axle. Not only does this weight affect handling and braking, but in an off-roading situation it can lead to axle breakage if the tire comes to a “dead stop” due to it’s weight being stopped against a rock while power is being applied.

So I wanted to compare the size and weight of some tires that I had lying around to see the differences. Here is the table. I’ll update as more stuff is weighted/measured.

Tires
Make
Model
Size (sidewall)
Size (Measured)
Weight [lb]
Interco
Truxus MT
265/75R16
32″ x 10.5″ x 16″
56
BFGoodrich
Mud Terrain
35″ x 12.5″ x 15″
35″ x 12.5″ x 15″
52
Michelin
LTX (M+S)
265/75-R16
32″ x 10.5″ x 16″
38
Wheels
Make
Model
Size
Backspacing
Weight [lb]
American Racing
ARE-767
15″ x 8″
4″
28
Cragar
Series 397
(Soft 8)
16″ x 8″
5″
31

I was really surprised that the Interco which is 3″ smaller than the BFG was heavier than the BFG.

Edit 24 May 2005 :: Added some free tires that Pete gave me for my tent trailer. 265s and only 38 lbs. These are “normal” tires in comparison to a MT.

Edit 25 Oct 2005 :: Added Cragar Soft 8s
