One of the things to be considered in building a Jeep is the weight of the tire and wheel assembly that is bolted to the axle. Not only does this weight affect handling and braking, but in an off-roading situation it can lead to axle breakage if the tire comes to a "dead stop" due to it's weight being stopped against a rock while power is being applied.

So I wanted to compare the size and weight of some tires that I had lying around to see the differences. Here is the table. I'll update as more stuff is weighted/measured.

It looks like Magna International has bought New Venture Gear and as such has taken over their web assets. Unfortunately, that means that it is no longer possible to get to the transfer case table that all us off-roaders refer to on a semi-regular basis.

I've pulled a copy out of Google's cache and reproduced it here before it goes into the ether for ever.

Just came in from measuring some axles. Thought I'd share. I've seen conflicting measurements on the web - now I'm confident of some of them since I've measured them myself.

A tape measure and a flat peice of plastic to extend the WMS to the outside of the drum was used in order to get a precise measurement (+/- 1/8"). Then the tape measure was clamped to the drum to hold it while measuring at the other side of the axle.
