Axle Widths

Just came in from measuring some axles. Thought I’d share. I’ve seen conflicting measurements on the web – now I’m confident of some of them since I’ve measured them myself.

A tape measure and a flat peice of plastic to extend the WMS to the outside of the drum was used in order to get a precise measurement (+/- 1/8″). Then the tape measure was clamped to the drum to hold it while measuring at the other side of the axle.

Here’s the measuerments:

1989 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) rear Dana 35:       60-1/2"
1974(?) International Scout front Dana 44:  60"
1974 International Scout rear Dana 44:      58-1/2"

I also found these axle widths while searching around on the web. I can’t say how accurate they are but they sound reasonable

1977 Cherokee wide track (FSJ) front Dana 44:   67"
1977 Cherokee wide track (FSJ) rear Dana 44:    65"
1979 Cherokee narrow track (FSJ) front Dana 44: 61"
1979 Cherokee narrow track (FSJ) rear Dana 44:  59"

1986 CJ wide track rear Dana 44:                54.5"
